SCREEN COMPOSITIONS 13 – Curated by Katherine Liberovskaya. It’s the thirteenth year of Screen Compositions; in Chinese culture (and we’re in Chinatown) 13 is very lucky and means “definitely vibrant”; so this 2017 edition presents a most definitely vibrant collection of intersections of moving image with sonic art; a program of screen works representing dynamic two-way collaborations between video/film artists and sound/music artists specifically intended for single-channel projection with no live or performance component; featuring collaborations by: Magdalena Campos-Pons / Neil Leonard; Paul Clipson / Byron Westbrook; Julie Doucet / Anne-f. Jacques; Janene Higgins / Cassis B Staudt; Luis Macias / Alfredo Costa Monteiro; Geoff Matters / Dok Gregory; Laetitia Morais / Carlos Guedes; Dafna Naphtali / Hans Tammen; Mercedes Peris / Ferrer-Molina; Paola Pisani / Alessandro Fogar. Time: 8:00pm. Age restrictions: All Ages. Address: 246 Frost Street Brooklyn, NY 11211. Venue phone: thefirehousespace@gmail.com. Peter Geisselbrecht, born 1954, studied music in Cologne (piano, composition, improvisation) under Klaus Oldemeyer, Joachim Blume, Vinko Globokar and Klaus Runze. He specializes in 20th century piano music, and frequently tours with a program of compositions by victims and contemporaries of the Nazi regime. As an improviser he works primarily with musicians who are equally versed in free improvisation, jazz and contemporary classical music. Since 1985 he teaches piano and improvisation at Giessen University, Germany. In a rare appearance at The Firehouse Space in NYC, German Pianist Peter Geisselbrecht will present songs by Brecht / Eisler expressing solitude, grieving and longing of the refugee – sung by Dafna Naphtali and Gisburg. A selection from Geisselbrecht’s CD with works by composer Federico Mompoú refer to a poem by Juan de la Cruz in which the poet describes a music that is the voice of the silence itself, while the solitude itself becomes music. Longing is also the theme of traditional Persian singing presented by composer Saman Samadi, in a poem about homesickness by Mahmoud Davoudi. The second part of the evening will see a collective improvisation by the participants, including Loui Terrier and Hans Tammen.

Venue phone: 212-431-1130. 60×60 is a one-hour-long show made by sequencing 60 pre-recorded pieces by 60 different composers, each piece a minute in length or shorter. A unique collaboration between VoxNovus / Robert Voisey and Harvestworks in New York City to create a 5.1 surround sound mix, this 60×60 presentation will be premiered at Harvestworks’ multichannel TEAMLab listening room in May 2014. Every one-minute piece will be played continuously without pause. Each of the 60 pieces will begin precisely at the beginning of the minute, this will mark the end of one piece and the beginning of another. 5-1-surround-sound.svgThe 60×60 project’s definition of a record work is as follows: any work created as a musical composition which is captured on recorded media, which does not require live performers for its production in broadcast at concert halls, radio, multi-media, etc. Its creation can include but not limited to acoustic instruments, voice, environmental sources, and computer (Sampling, Max/MSP, Ableton Live, MIDI, C Sound, ProTools, etc.) All works submitted had been with the understanding that it is their recording that is of prime importance and is what will be used to determine its selection. Since this is a multichannel work, the panel paid special attention to the spatial aspects of the compositions. 60×60 is a project of “signature works” and short works created specifically for the 60×60 project. Excerpts of larger works had been strongly discouraged. Works generated from procedures (i.e. mathematical matrices, organizational systems, or computer programs,) remixed works, or themes and motives recomposed from other of the composer’s own work were acceptable. The call was open to composers of any nationality, age, or career stage.

You will learn about the basics of psychoacoustics, and new stratetgies for listening, thinking about (and creating with) audio, and create your own works as a final project. Because of my background as a performer/composer in this field, I can give a unique focus and perspective on incorporating live sound processing, the human voice, and musical structure into interactive audio projects that you will create. at Supemarkt Creative Resource Center, Brunnenstrasse 64, 13355 Berlin

Masters of the Universe (Declaration of a lockout!) Ball for the Masters of the Universe (Ending with revolution and victory of the workers!) Stock Exchange. Seizure of the stock exchange by the proletariat, who turn it into a pantheon of work.” Unsettling, frantic and anti-sentimental, Hans Tammen’s ZAVODNIKS – for whom machine oil is mother’s milk – fuse relentless polyrhythmic machinations with ethereal yet roughly sewn soundscapes, like a mix of Mwandishi, Bitches Brew and Sextant, with a hint of Magma. Dark, sometimes brooding ensemble passages mix and mingle with tightly woven drum-loops, and extended solo cadenzas build up to a mighty hymn to machine work, music of a metallic nightmare. Fri, Feb 1, 2013 solo — Audio Chandelier multi-channel works, Stephan Moore Brooklyn Reverse Space United States
Time: 8:00pm. Address: 28 Frost Street. Venue phone: info@reversespace.org. OPENING FRIDAY 2/1, 6pm -10pm Solo sets by Dafna Naphtali and Stephan Moore, 8pm DETAILS of the installations and live performances: Robert Curgenven BARDO A non-place, an in-between zone, Bardo is a spatial and temporal suspension within overlapping yet distinct fields interpermeated by an aetheric tactility: sounds disorientingly enter and leave, merging and confusing the boundaries of interiority and exteriority. Moving from the edge of silence to moments of complete immersion, Bardo draws on the physicality of sound – not just the physical impact on the body but the way in which sound can shape our perception of space and the flow of time – cumulatively fostering a precessional state where one expects things to change but also expects them to stay the same. Barry Weisblat NO PRESENT Gathered artifacts with sound. (offered only after 6pm) Dafna Naphtali AUDIO CHANDELIER works for multi-channel sound, field recordings and voice. Stephan Moore BASAUR Layers of rough sound concentrated within limited frequency bands, dispersed monophonically with a short, variable, per-channel delay introduced in inverse quantities (by pair) at the point of exit from the production system, intimating illusory movement. http://contoureditions.com/ http://reversespace.org/?p=497

Addressing the electroacoustic environment of the performance space allows for a site-specific version of the piece through a complex sampling and spatialization process. While the difference between live sound processing and other electronic music practices has perplexed the audiences in the past, these days the role of the live sound processor is much more understood. With faster laptops and more widespread use and availability of classic live sound processing as plugins, these techniques have gradually become more acceptable, and in some music genres practically expected. Both performers and audiences have become more savvy about the techniques and sounds.
